What Does Self-Defense Mean?

Although self-defense is a popular topic in many circles today, most do not know what it entails. This brings us to the question; what is self-defense? Despite numerous self-defense definitions, it can be described as one’s right to prevent suffering through some amount of force or violence. For self-defense to be actionable in the legal arena, questions such as these need to be answered; were the threat imminent? Was the fear of harm reasonable? Could the self-defence be termed ‘Imperfect self-defense?’ These questions among other things would be asked to determine if one’s actions to defend oneself could pass as self-defense.

Self-defence has some vital elements which will be considered before it can be actionable. These elements are; 

  • Innocence, 
  • Imminence,
  • Reasonableness, 
  • Avoidance, and 
  • Proportionality.

Importance of Self-defence

It increases one’s confidence

At times, one could find oneself in conflicting, dangerous, and scary situations; to avoid freezing and getting attacked, self-defense is important. Being skilled at certain self-defense techniques can be the deciding factor between being hurt or not, or even life and death. In an intimidating situation, your self-defense skills will give you the confidence to either contain or overcome that circumstance.

In times past, it was thought that women were the main victims of violent attacks. However, violent attacks on men are on an alarming rise. This is why it is important that irrespective of gender, everyone learns self-defense.


Self-defense is an exciting concept as it helps one to protect one’s self in times of emergencies. Although it is beneficial, it should not be used as a means to perpetrate evil acts.
